Weekend Box Office Report: April 13-15, 2018

Rampage stomps into first place!

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and his sizeable simian friend climbed to the top of the box office this weekend with RAMPAGE, which opened with an estimated $34.5 million!

The adaptation of the 80s arcade building-breaking videogame opened just a bit beneath the $36.1 million start of Johnson's recent JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE, which slowly steamrolled to $403 million domestic and $953 million worldwide. It's also slightly below the opening of his other Kevin Hart pairing CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE, which started with $35.5 million in June of 2016.

The new PG-13 monster smash, which reunites The Rock with his SAN ANDREAS and JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND director Brad Peyton, cost a reported $120 million.

Johnson and his huge gray gorilla buddy also snatched another $114.1 million from international audiences for a worldwide opening weekend of $148.6 million.

Critics were split down the middle on the big-screen visualization of the retro button-masher, giving it a 50% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Pound your way to the JoBlo review HERE.

A QUIET PLACE was shushing close behind in second place with $32.6 million, muffled only by 35% from its opening last weekend. The John Krasinski-directed horror-thriller (co-starring wife Emily Blunt) has a ten-day domestic total just short of $100 million, plus an extra $51.7 million from overseas, all on a reported cost of $17 million.

Opening in third place was the new PG-13 thriller TRUTH OR DARE with $19 million.

The latest from low-cost horror company Blumhouse came out short of their recent higher-profile releases like GET OUT ($33.3 million) and SPLIT ($40 million), along with the $26 million opening of last October's HAPPY DEATH DAY. Still, their supernatural spin on the hypothetically harmless party game had a meager $3.5 million budget.

READY PLAYER ONE was in fourth place with $11.2 million, taking the virtual-reality adventure to $114.6 million domestic on its third weekend in theaters. Director Steven Spielberg's futuristic nostalgia extravagance (adapted from Ernest Cline's book) now has a worldwide total of $474 million on a reported cost of $175 million.

In fifth place was the R-rated comedy BLOCKERS with $10.2 million, losing 50% of business from last week's opening. The John Cena/Leslie Mann parenting challenge has a ten-day domestic total of $36.9 million and $52.9 milion worldwide (on a $21 million reported cost).

Marvel's BLACK PANTHER was in sixth place with $5.3 million, finally starting to show signs of fatigue after dominating for two months. The African superhero now has a domestic total of $673.7 million, and a worldwide total of $1.31 billion.

Filmmaker Wes Anderson's ISLE OF DOGS was in seventh place with $5 million as it expanded to nearly 2000 locations. The stop-motion animated comedy has chewed up $18.4 million domestic after several weeks in limited release.

Religious drama I CAN ONLY IMAGINE followed in eighth with $3.8 million, and Tyler Perry's revenge thriller TYLER PERRY'S ACRIMONY was in ninth with $3.7 million. Fact-based drama CHAPPAQUIDDICK closed out the chart with $3 million, slowing by 47% from its opening last weekend.

Outside the chart, PACIFIC RIM UPRISING went to the scrapyard and SHERLOCK GNOMES headed back to the garden. The Jon Hamm/Rosamund Pike war drama BEIRUT opened on Wednesday for $2 million on 755 screens.

Next weekend finds the Broken Lizard guys returning as Vermont's finest in SUPER TROOPERS 2, Paula Patton has a rough weekend getaway in TRAFFIK, and Martin Freeman faces spirits in GHOST STORIES.
