Ryan Reynolds admits he’s never seen the final version of Green Lantern

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Ryan Reynolds seems to love taking the piss out of his past superhero work. Not has he mocked his version of Wade Wilson/Deadpool from X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, but he’s also taken a stab at his work in the 2011 flop, GREEN LANTERN. Now, the latter film is so obviously bad that a person doesn’t even have to see the whole thing to make fun of it. Turns out, Reynolds can count himself as one of those people, as he has admitted he’s never actually watched the finished version.

The actor did an interview with EW in their newest DEADPOOL 2 issue and was asked about his infamous 2011 film. It was here he revealed that he has never actually seen the movie, and it's simply one of several films of his he’s just never sat down to watch.

Look, I’ve never seen the full final version of GREEN LANTERN. I saw a very late stage rough cut of the film. Now, that isn’t to say that I didn’t want to see it because I didn’t like it. I have movies that have been received pretty well that I haven’t seen, and then I have movies that I have seen 100 times that people don’t like but I just like.

LANTERN was one of the most anticipated movies of 2011, as it marked one of the first major outings for a DC character that wasn’t Batman or Superman. The movie crashed and burned, making $219 million globally (off a $200 million budget) and earning scathing reviews from critics and audiences. Reynolds went on to make fun of the movie in DEADPOOL (and, apparently, DEADPOOL 2) with the joke, “Don’t make the suit green. Or animated!” as a reference to his characters all-digital suit in LANTERN.

Look, does he even really need to see the movie? The movie was a clear low-point for the genre, but at least Reynolds can look back at it with a sense of humor. All that matters now is that Reynolds has found his groove with DEADPOOL and that the movies allow him to mock some of his past efforts. But, seriously, Mr. Reynolds, don’t go back and watch LANTERN. At this point, it would probably be like opening the Ark of the Covenant.

DEADPOOL 2 arrives May 18.
