Set Visit: Green Lantern!

Aliens, mysterious green powers, and a guy with a devil-may-care attitude. It’s all you could ask for from a superhero movie and it’s everything I got to experience when I visited the set of the upcoming Warner Bros. film, GREEN LANTERN, last summer.

While I can’t divulge too many details without spoiling some really fun secrets, I can tell you that all of my faith in the film, which had been dashed by that lackluster EW cover of GL’s costume and a sketchy early trailer, has been utterly restored.

So what did I see that made me a tried-and-true Green believer? Let’s just say that there was a visit to the art department and some delectable details about the plot and characters that were dropped. I also got a chance to speak with some of the stars (Ryan Reynolds and Mark Strong), pick the brains’ of the crew responsible for the effects, and see some of the more practical aspects of the film — including never-before-seen footage.

In the meantime, check out these new pics and stills given to us by the WB and take heart in the fact that while I had been the first to make a “meh” noise upon hearing that the GL’s costume would be in CGI and had further raised my eyebrow in skepticism, I now think that the filmmakers made the right choice and that it was a great choice to make.

At my set visit I saw and heard some things that changed my perspective and opinion of the costume enough so that I can (almost) confidently say it’s going to look awesome. Plus, let’s be honest, Ryan Reynolds is going to be “wearing” it. You can’t go wrong with that physique.

Oh… I also got to wear the ring — yes, the ring. It was love. And if you want to feel that love, starting today, you can log on to the film’s official website and record your own Green Lantern oath (you know the one: “In brightest day, in blackest night, No evil shall escape my sight, Let those who worship evil’s might, Beware my power… Green Lantern’s light!”) and have it posted right on the site for all to see! Just head to greenlanternmovie.warnerbros.com/oath and click the “Take the Oath” button to submit your version. Will it be as good as Ryan Reynolds? Probably not, but give it a shot anyway…
