Weekend Box Office Report: June 8-10, 2018

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Ocean's 8 steals first place!

Sandra Bullock assembled a crew of thieves this weekend and OCEAN'S 8 swiped the top spot at the box office with an estimated opening of $41.5 million!

Danny Ocean's sister and her cohorts (including Cate Blanchett and Rihanna) had a bigger opening than any of the previous star-filled trilogy — OCEAN'S ELEVEN started with $38.1 million back in 2001, followed by $39.1 million for OCEAN'S TWELVE in 2004 and $36.1 million for OCEAN'S THIRTEEN in 2007.

It's a solid start for a Bullock-fronted feature, better than THE BLIND SIDE ($34.1 million) and THE HEAT ($39.1 million), but lower than the sci-fi thriller GRAVITY, which opened to $55.7 million. (As for Blanchett, nothing comes close to the $122.7 million opening of her villain turn in THOR: RAGNAROK.)

The sequel/spinoff from THE HUNGER GAMES director Gary Ross (taking over for original trilogy director Steven Soderbergh) cost a reported $70 million. The PG-13 heist comedy also snatched $12.2 million from overseas, although it doesn't open in most international territories until the next two weekends.

Critics were a bit wary of the ladies' criminal scheme, giving it an average of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can check out the JoBlo review HERE.

After two weeks at #1, SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY descended to second place with $15.1 million for a domestic total of $176.1 million. Director Ron Howard's Han/Chewie prequel (which may have cost as much as $300 million) currently has a worldwide total of $312.2 million.

In third place was the R-rated comic book sequel DEADPOOL 2 with $13.6 million. After four weekends, the raunchy and rowdy Ryan Reynolds action-comedy has a domestic total of $278.6 million and a worldwide total of $655.2 million (on a reported cost of $110 million).

Opening in fourth place was the new R-rated horror movie HEREDITARY with $13 million.

The Toni Collette/Gabriel Byrne tale of family terror, which drew buzz at festivals early this year, cost a reported $10 million. Critics greatly appreciated the creeping dread presented by the movie, giving it a 93% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR was in fifth place with $6.8 million, bringing it to a domestic total of $654.7 million after seven weekends (and seemingly out of reach of BLACK PANTHER's nearly $700 million finish). The heroic struggle's worldwide total is now just a few stacks short of $2 billion.

The aquatic survival drama ADRIFT was in sixth with $5 million, sinking by 56% from its opening last week. The PG-13 Shailene Woodley/Sam Claflin romance-tragedy has a ten-day domestic total of $21.4 million (on a reported cost of $35 million).

In seventh was BOOK CLUB with $4.2 million, taking the $10 million ensemble romcom to a domestic total of $56.8 million on it fourth weekend in theaters.

In eighth place was the new R-rated action-thriller HOTEL ARTEMIS with an opening of $3.1 million.

Despite an interesting cast (including Jodie Foster, Jeff Goldblum, Dave Bautista and Sterling K. Brown), writer-director Drew Pearce's pulp story of tensions in a "criminal hospital" didn't make much of an impact. The neo-noir set in futuristic L.A. cost a reported $15 million.

Critics were hestitant to check in at the felony facility, giving the movie an average of 58% on Rotten Tomatoes. Shoot over to the JoBlo review HERE.

The bloodstained sci-fi thriller UPGRADE was in ninth place with $2.2 million, losing 52% from its opening last weekend. Blumhouse's R-rated revenge tale with Logan Marshall-Green has a ten-day domestic total of $9.2 million (on a cost below $5 million). Melissa McCarthy's comedy LIFE OF THE PARTY closed out the list.

Outside the chart, BREAKING IN departed with comedy remake OVERBOARD and Johnny Knoxville's ACTION POINT (after a single week in the Top 10). In limited release, the Mister Rogers biopic WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? opened on 27 screens for a $470k weekend, a per-screen average of $16k.

Meanwhile, dinosaur sequel JURASSIC PARK: FALLEN KINGDOM opened overseas (two weeks ahead of its domestic debut) and chomped up a $155 million international opening.

Next weekend has Jeremy Renner and his buddies playing a lengthy game of TAG, and Pixar's cape-less super-family returns in THE INCREDIBLES 2.
