Hans Zimmer emerges from superhero retirement to score X-Men: Dark Phoenix

After lending his distinctive talents to more than a few superhero films over the years, including MAN OF STEEL, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, and, of course, Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy, composer Hans Zimmer announced that he had "officially retired from the superhero business." However, just when Zimmer thought he was out, they pulled him back in. While speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Evan Peters let slip that Hans Zimmer would be scoring X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX.

[The production] was actually very tame. Simon directed this one, and came in very prepared, very professional. It was a different energy on set and everything got done like clockwork. It was very seamless and everybody was a little bit more level-headed, so it was a very pleasurable, light experience. I think the film is gonna be incredible. Knock on wood. Hans Zimmer’s scoring it—I don’t know if I was supposed to say that or not. Simon has surrounded himself with incredible people, and Simon knows this world better than anybody, so it was just cool to see him—he’s so happy and so in his element in that world, and also being able to direct and sort of guide everybody in this way. I was very happy for him and I think it’s gonna be great.

It will definitely be exciting to hear what Hans Zimmer can bring to the X-MEN, especially as the project was able to lure him out of his self-imposed superhero retirement. The upcoming X-MEN sequel has been written and directed by Simon Kinberg, and Evan Peters added the film is "different" from the ones which came before. Sophie Turner had previously that X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX will dial the franchise back towards a more grounded universe. "[X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX is] so gritty and there are so many fantastical things in this movie and we really wanted it to resonate with every member of the audience who watches it so we had to make to so real as well," Turner said. "You still get that sense of escapism when people start flying but there’s so much reality in it. I think it will really affect people. And the way Simon shot it — the majority of this movie is handheld, like Steadicam."

X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX will hit theaters on November 2, 2018.
