Spawn Todd McFarlane

Update: Todd McFarlane promised an announcement about his SPAWN reboot at San Diego Comic-Con today, and here it is. McFarlane revealed via Facebook Live that the SPAWN movie has found a home at Blumhouse Productions and that Jason Blum will be producing, which means that the SPAWN film has moved much closer to becoming real. Todd McFarlane has already written the first draft of the script and will be making his feature directorial debut on the film. "Badass. R. It's coming. Get ready for it. We're going into production," McFarlane said. "We'll give you all the updates … That's the news, no more talking, it's time to do. Todd out, bye." Jason Blum added, "Having worked with many visionary directors, I think Todd's unique artistic talents will only add to his role as director of this film."

Upon his death, Albert Francis Simmons exchanged his soul with a lord of Hell in order to see his wife again, only to find himself transformed into the demonic creature known as Spawn. That's pretty much all I know about the character, but even I'm aware that Todd McFarlane's anti-hero hasn't had the best luck on the big-screen. The first SPAWN film was released in 1997 and starred Michael Jai White in the title role. It was also the last SPAWN film as it didn't exactly do much to endure itself with fans, but Todd McFarlane has nonetheless been attempting to get another SPAWN film off the ground since then.

The SPAWN reboot has spent much of its life languishing in development hell, but Todd McFarlane took to Facebook today to announce that he will be making an official announcement about the SPAWN movie tomorrow at Comic-Con at 2:00pm PST. That's pretty much it, we'll have to wait until tomorrow to see what that announcement is all about, but it's hopefully good news for those of you who have been anxiously awaiting another SPAWN film.

Todd McFarlane has previously teased that the potential SPAWN film will be aiming for a hard R-rating, which will go further than either DEADPOOL or LOGAN in terms of the nasty stuff. "Listen, I’m going to paint it for you," McFarlane said. "The movie is going to be a dark R…If here’s PG-13 and here’s Deadpool and here’s Logan, we’re going to be here. It’s going to be dark. It’s going to be nasty." McFarlane has kept a tight hold on his property since the failure of the first movie, and in order to ensure that his vision isn't tampered with, he's insisted that he will be the one to write, produce, and direct the SPAWN reboot.

We'll be sure to bring you Todd McFarlane's SPAWN announcement tomorrow, but how are you folks feeling about the SPAWN reboot potentially moving forward after all these years?
