It would be a stretch to see Sandra Bullock in a role of supervillain in a live-action film; she’s one of America’s favorite actresses, or sweethearts if you want. Luckily for us she can at least voice a villain with the use of animation. In the upcoming film MINIONS, a spin-off for the titular characters from DESPICABLE ME, she plays Scarlet Overkill and we have some information about the film and her characters origins.

The synopsis of the film goes:

Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression. But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first-ever female super-villain.

Speaking to USA Today, Minions producer Chris Meledandri, talked about Scarlet saying:

Scarlet Overkill has fantastic hair, wears great clothes and has a lethal uppercut. When we turn her loose on the world, she is going to come out standing on top. … Scarlet has all the gadgetry and accouterments of villainy. This is a side to Sandra Bullock we haven’t seen before. She is really enjoying playing with this villainy. But underneath there’s a character you cannot help but fall in love with.

Pierre Coffin, who co-directed the film with Kyle Balda, says:

Scarlet is an unusual supervillain. She is a dangerously charming woman, which could not have been easy in the late 1960s.

While I’m not one for most animation spin-offs, MINIONS seemed to have a lot going for it right out of the gate when DESPICABLE ME first arrived. They stole the show and it was clear soon after that we would be seeing these guys in their own movie soon enough. I think it's going to be a lot of fun and look forward to checking it out this summer.

MINIONS opens in theaters on July 10, 2015.
