Steve Guttenberg says a new Police Academy movie is still on the way

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

In this age of reboots, remakes, and sequels nothing is off limits, no matter how unnecessary or undesirable. That includes a new POLICE ACADEMY movie, which has been trying to get off the ground for years to no success and the collective sigh of relief from the planet. But just when you thought the series would be kept in its crypt and would remain undisturbed, series star Steve Guttenberg revealed they still plan on resurrecting the franchise for an eighth entry.

Guttenberg (who appeared in the first four movies as Carey Mahoney) was on Twitter addressing a fan asking about a new PA movie, to which the actor said that another movie is still on the way.

The PA movies are a fantastic example of a franchise being hammered to death until audiences couldn’t take it anymore, with six movies being released between 1984 and 1989. The first three did well at the box office (despite middling reviews from critics), but each experienced diminishing returns and the final movies were critically panned. A seventh movie was barely released in 1994, making only $126,000 at the box office. Since then you could often catch the movies during marathons on Comedy Central, a staple of “I’m sick and can’t find the remote” viewing.

The powers that be have been trying to get the eighth movie into theaters, the development of which can be traced back to the early ‘00s. Since 2010 directors and writers like Scott Zabielski (TOSH.O) and Jeremy Garelick (THE BREAK-UP) have been attached, the idea being to bring in a new class of cops with Guttenberg and some members of the original coming back to train them. In 2014 Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key were set to reboot the series, but obviously, they took different career paths.

So, do you all want to see more ACADEMY shenanigans? A new class of comedians would be brought in for sure, so who would you like to see assigned to the mission? Or we could just forget we ever had this conversation and never speak of it again.
