Universal fits SING 2 into Christmas 2020; Pets 2 moved back one year

Do you like cute animals doing silly things? Is your heart filled with magic and sunshine watching two boneless, yellow goof balls bang each other over the head? Then you’re just the kind of person who is going to love this news about the upcoming slate of Universal/Illumination animated films! In the meantime I’m just going to jump out of this window.

I forgot I lived on the first floor. Anyway, you won't be surprised to hear the studio responsible for hit after hit like DESPICABLE ME and SECRET LIFE OF PETS is making sequels for their current roster of films, and that now includes the recently released SING. Deadline got the scoop that the animated singing-competition film will be getting a sequel and is aiming for a Christmas release in 2020.

The sequel to SING has been announced after an unexpected box office run, with the movie so far raking in $250 million domestically. Though it was always expected to make some dough during the holiday season I don’t think people expected it to be so big going up against ROGUE ONE. But the movie took the “alternate content” route to great success and we will get to see more of Matthew McConaughey’s smoothing-talking Koala bear.

However, fans of this year’s massive SECRET LIFE OF PETS will have to wait a full year for the planned sequel, as it's been pushed back from July 13, 2018 to Fourth of July weekend 2019. As well, MINIONS 2 is moving up one week from July 10 to Fourth of July weekend 2020. Ah, nothing says America like cute, family-driven nonsense.

Okay, I know it sounds like I’m giving these movies a hard time, and though they’re completely harmless I feel an infant could peg why these movies are so big. Basically they’re all made with the same goal in mind, which is to bombard the screen with cute characters in a colorful, bright, whacky scenario and wait for the money to roll in. None of these movies, going all the way back to DESPICABLE ME, have been less than box office sensations because of this, and I feel Universal doesn’t want to change course. Their entire line-up is one slate of sequels, so clearly they’re not trying to do anything unique or substantial. I’m sorry, this seems unfair to be so irate over a series of children’s movies. But seriously, how can a movie about yellow pill bottles speaking gibberish make $1.159 billion?

SING is in theaters now, and Universal/Illumination's DESPICABLE ME 3 hits theaters June 30, 2017.
