Pacific Rim Uprising director already has an idea for a third movie

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

PACIFIC RIM UPRISING is officially in theaters now, and fans who have been waiting five long years for more robot-monster bashing can get their fix right now. Those same fans may not have to wait as long for a third entry because director Steven DeKnight has already mapped out where he wants to go for a third outing.

The director sat down with CinemaBlend to talk about the new movie, and in the process said he has a “rough outline” as to where he wants to go for the next movie. He also says doing a third movie was always the plan, with the hope to establish a Star Wars-esque universe that would branch off into other directions.

I can't give any details, but yes, I have a very clear idea [for the future]. When we were developing Uprising I was constantly jotting down notes about what I would want to do for the next movie. So I have a very, very rough outline of what that movie would be. And the plan was always to do the third installment, and then at the end of that movie expand the universe to a Star Wars/Star Trek-style [franchise] where it could go in many different directions. Different stories, main canon, side stories, standalones, the whole thing.

So far the sequel is not faring as well with critics as the first one did, with the current Rotten Tomatoes score hovering around 47 percent, with the box office tracking placing it at about $25 million for the weekend, well below the $37 million weekend for the first movie. This will make it incredibly hard for the movie to get to where the first movie did at the box office (about $100 million domestic), especially with READY PLAYER ONE hitting theaters next week. That being said, the movie’s ultimate aim is the international market, especially China, and if it does well there like the first movie did, UPRISING could be a monster hit.

So, if you want more PACIFIC RIM, go see this movie! If not, well, too bad, because the people in China are likely to eat this shit up.
