Jennifer Lawrence battles gravity while swimming in first Passengers clip

Passengers Chris Pratt Jennifer Lawrence

After waking up ninety years too early while on an intergalactic voyage to a new world, I'd imagine that most people would immediately want to jump in the pool. Jim (Chris Pratt) and Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) find themselves in just that situation in Morten Tyldum's PASSENGERS when their hibernation pods on the Starship Avalon open prematurely and leave the pair stranded on the giant spaceship. With quite a lot of time to kill before they reach their destination, Aurora decides to take a dip in the Avalon's rather awesome pool in this first clip from PASSENGERS, only to have a malfunction turn off the gravity and leave her fighting for her life.

Ruh oh, that doesn't look good. Our own Editor-in-Chief Paul Shirey was impressed by this clip when he attended CinemaCon 2016 earlier this year, calling it one of several "truly cool and inventive sequences" found throughout the film. He also added that "the concept, style, and tone of the film were outstanding" and "the chemistry between Pratt and Lawrence is electric." The first trailer for PASSENGERS certainly looked promising and I've got my fingers crossed that it will deliver.

The official synopsis for PASSENGERS:

On a routine journey through space to a new home, two passengers, sleeping in suspended animation, are awakened 90 years too early when their ship malfunctions. As Jim (Chris Pratt) and Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) face living the rest of their lives on board, with every luxury they could ever ask for, they begin to fall for each other, unable to deny their intense attraction… until they discover the ship is in grave danger. With the lives of 5000 sleeping passengers at stake, only Jim and Aurora can save them all.

PASSENGERS is set to hit theaters on December 21, 2016.
