Weekend Box Office Report: September 1-3, 2017

The Hitman's Bodyguard stays on top!

The Samuel L. Jackson/Ryan Reynolds team-up THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD headed up the box office for a third time with an estimated $10.2 million!

The R-rated buddy-comedy action flick has a $54.9 million domestic total, on a reported cost of $30 million.

A quiet Labor Day weekend closed out the lowest-grossing summer in over a decade. Still, despite a lack of new wide releases, most movies on the chart saw a slight boost over last weekend when Hurricane Harvey and the McGregor/Mayweather fight impacted box office business.

ANNABELLE: CREATION remained in second place, adding another $7.3 million toward THE CONJURING spinoff's $88.9 million domestic total. The R-rated horror movie, which cost a reported $15 million, is up to $253 million worldwide.

The Jeremy Renner/Elizabeth Olsen thriller WIND RIVER moved up a spot to third, collecting $5.8 million as it added another 500 screens to its run. The R-rated crime-drama has a domestic total of $18.2 million (on a reported $11 million cost).

The PG-rated animated fantasy LEAP! grabbed $4.8 million in fourth place, bounding by 3% from its opening last weekend and giving it a ten-day domestic total of $11.3 million.

Steven Soderbergh's heist comedy LOGAN LUCKY was in fifth with $4.4 million, and Christopher Nolan's sturdy WWII movie DUNKIRK followed in sixth with $4.1 million as it reached $178.7 million domestic and $458 million worldwide.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING was still clinging to seventh place for the fourth weekend in a row, THE EMOJI MOVIE keeps on texting in the Top 10, and DESPICABLE ME 3 jumped back onto the list for the holiday weekend. The R-rated comedy GIRLS TRIP hangs on at the bottom, bringing it to a $111 million domestic total.

Most of the interesting activity took place outside the chart. The 40th anniversary re-release of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND descended onto 900 locations and made $1.8 million, in advance of the latest Blu-ray/4K reissue of Steven Spielberg's classic sci-fi drama (on shelves Sept. 19).

Marvel tried to drum up audience awareness for their upcoming INHUMANS series by showing the first two episodes in almost 400 IMAX theaters, and brought in $1.5 million with the large-format release (earning a better per-screen average than anything in the Top 10).

And the Alicia Vikander/Christoph Waltz period drama TULIP FEVER finally saw release almost two years after it was originally scheduled, and was greeted with $1.2 million on 765 screens (and a critical rejection with 11% on Rotten Tomatoes).

Next weekend gets September going with sewer-clown terror in the big-screen adaptation of Stephen King's IT, Reese Witherspoon in the romcom HOME AGAIN, and Charlie Sheen in the Twin Towers drama 9/11.
