Ellen Page in talks to star in remake of Joel Schumacher’s Flatliners

A remake of Joel Schumacher's 1990 sci-fi/horror FLATLINERS has been in the cards for a while, but you'd be forgiven if you'd completely forgotten about that because I sure did. The original film, which starred Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, and Kevin Bacon revolved around "a group of medical students who journey into the afterworld to find meaning in their own lives before being resuscitated in the nick of time. As expected, the experiments soon go awry."

It's been a while since there had been any movement on the film, but now Variety is reporting that Ellen Page is currently in talks for a starring role. There's no word on which character Ellen Page is up for or how the remake may differ from the original, but we do know that Niels Arden Oplev, director of the original GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, is set to direct the remake from a screenplay by Ben Ripley. I've never seen FLATLINERS, but when I glance at the original's mixed reviews, it's possible that a remake may be able to take the film's intriguing premise in an exiting new direction.

Ellen Page's latest film, FREEHELD, opened on October 2, 2015. You can check out our own Chris Bumbray's review of the film right here.

What do you folks think? Does FLATLINERS need (or deserve) a remake?
