Melissa Benoist has been officially been cast as the title character in CBS' new Supergirl series. The 26-year-old actress can currently be seen as Miles Teller’s love interest in the critically acclaimed WHIPLASH. Some astute readers with questionable taste in TV may recognize her from a role on Glee that she had for two seasons. That would make her the second Glee cast member, after The Flash’s Grant Gustin, to move on to become a DC superhero.

Here is the official description for Supergirl:

“Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.”

The series will be executive produced The Flash and Arrow’s Greg Berlanti which of course brings to many minds the idea that Supergirl could crossover with The Flash and Arrow at some point. CBS owns the CW but the answer is still unclear even though Berlanti indicated that he certainly would like to see it. Next up I hope we get to see an image of Benoist as a blond; not that there's anything wrong with her current style.

What do you think of the casting?
