The Academy names which films will advance for best makeup and hairstyling

It won't be long now before The Oscars come to town, bringing joy and frustration to movie fans everywhere in the spirit of "friendly" competition. Be sure to check out all of the movies that you can, and do your best to make informed decisions when selecting your predicted winners for your annual office pool.

Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the seven films that will be eligible to win an Oscar for best makeup and hairstyling.

And the nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling are: Netflix's BRIGHT, DARKEST HOUR, GHOST IN THE SHELL, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, I, TONYA, VICTORIA & ABDUL, and WONDER.

In accordance with the rules, each participating member of the Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven nominated films. After the screening process is complete, members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.

The Academy's final list of nominees for each and every category will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018. Until then, we can just sit here and ponder the reasons why films like BLADE RUNNER 2049, THE SHAPE OF WATER, and STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI didn't make the cut? Honestly, all three of those films were prime examples of some of the best work being done in the departmets of hair and makeup this year. I suppose it's a good thing we have The Annual Golden Schmoe Awards to look forward to, right?
