Weekend Box Office Report: August 3-5, 2018

Mission: Impossible – Fallout clings to first place!

For a second weekend, intrepid agent Ethan Hunt held the top spot at the box office as MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT earned an estimated $35 million!

Tom Cruise's tireless stunt work has paid off with a ten-day domestic total of $124.4 million. The sixth mission in the series (and Christopher McQuarrie's second time directing) also has a worldwide total of $329.4 million, on a reported $178 million cost.

The PG-13 espionage thriller fell by only 42% from its opening last week, the second-best hold of any movie in the franchise after MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL, which (after a limited IMAX-only release in mid-December of 2011) went wide on Christmas weekend and then made nearly the same amount over the following New Year's holiday weekend. GHOST PROTOCOL also remains the highest-grossing impossible mission with nearly $694 million worldwide.

Opening in second place was Disney's CHRISTOPHER ROBIN with $25 million.

The PG-rated live-action/CG-animated fantasy, which finds the adult titular character (Ewan McGregor) reuniting with Winnie the Pooh and other childhood friends from the Hundred Acre Wood, cost a reported $75 million.

Critics weren't entirely warmed by the whimsy from director Marc Forster (FINDING NEVERLAND, WORLD WAR Z), giving the midlife encounter with fuzzy buddies a 68% average on Rotten Tomatoes. You can find the JoBlo review right HERE.

In third place was the new R-rated action-comedy THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME with an opening weekend of $12.3 million.

The duo of Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon getting unintentionally drawn into an international conspiracy cost a reported $40 million (it opens elsewhere around the world in the coming weeks).

Critics didn't really find the humor in the pair's dangerous and occasionally crude globetrotting antics, giving the movie an average of 37% on Rotten Tomatoes. Check out the JoBlo review HERE.

The musical sequel MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN still had a strong voice in fourth place with $9 million, singing a lucrative tune of $91.3 million domestic and $230.5 million worldwide (on a reported $75 million cost).

In fifth was Denzel Washington's not-exactly-retired badass in THE EQUALIZER 2 with $8.8 million, bringing the R-rated action sequel to a domestic total of $79.8 million on its third weekend in theaters.

Animated creature sequel HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3: SUMMER VACATION was in sixth with $8.2 million, drifting to $136.4 million domestic and $338.7 million worldwide after four weeks.

Marvel's ANT-MAN AND THE WASP followed in seventh place with $6.1 million as the Paul Rudd/Evangeline Lilly insectile sequel has reached a domestic total of $195.4 million and $426.3 million worldwide.

In eighth place was the new teen thriller THE DARKEST MINDS with $5.8 million for its opening weekend.

Directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson (KUNG FU PANDA 2 and 3), the PG-13 adaptation of the sci-fi young-adult book by Alexandra Bracken cost a reported $34 million.

The dystopian tale of superkids didn't impress critics, who gave it an 18% average on Rotten Tomatoes. You can read the JoBlo review right HERE.

Toward the bottom was Pixar's sequel INCREDIBLES 2, still punching crime with $5 million for a $583.1 million domestic total and $1.04 billion after two months. The young animated DC Comics heroes of TEEN TITANS GO! TO THE MOVIES closed out the list with $4.8 million, losing 53% of business from their opening last week.

Outside the chart, THE FIRST PURGE was purged along with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's SKYSCRAPER and dino-sequel JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM.  In limited release, the Chloe Moretz drama THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST had a $26k per-screen average. Meanwhile, Marvel's BLACK PANTHER finally crossed $700 million domestic, nearly six months after it first hit screens.

Next weekend has Jason Statham dealing with a friggin' huuuge shark in THE MEG, an infamous creepypasta comes to life in the horror movie SLENDER MAN, Spike Lee sends John David Washington and Adam Driver undercover in BLACKKKLANSMAN, and (on Wednesday) canines bring people together in the comedy DOG DAYS.
