Rogue One’s Ben Mendelsohn to be Robin Hood: Origins’ Sheriff of Nottingham

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

I try to stay positive when it comes to remakes and reboots. I feel like, if you have a unique take on a story, go for it. Why not? Hell, even if the impetus for the studio is to churn out something recognizable for profit, it doesn't mean a filmmaker can't also coincidentally be passionate about revitalizing an IP (which, if you think about it, is probably why they're hired in the first place).

This is all to say that I know I've been hard on ROBIN HOOD: ORIGINS before (though God, even writing out "ORIGINS" gives me unwanted mouthless Deadpool flashbacks), I'm still willing to give the film a fair shake. The fact that they recently just cast ROGUE ONE's Ben Mendelsohn as the Sheriff of Nottingham doesn't hurt either. And while I haven't seen ROGUE ONE yet (though Mendelsohn seems to be killing it in the trailers), I still remember him as Bruce Wayne's sniveling corporate rival in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, which could be a fun take.

Now this reboot, beyond being an origin story, will be about Robin Hood as "a war-hardened crusader who joins a Moorish commander in an audacious revolt against the corrupt English monarchy." Okay.

So what do you guys feel about this remake? And does Mendelsohn's casting make you gain or lose excitement?

ROBIN HOOD: ORIGINS, starring Taron Egerton as the eponymous Hood and Jamie Foxx as Little John, will steal from you sometime in 2017 (though no firm release date has been set).
