I suppose as long as we are bringing back ASTRO BOY, there's room for a live-action ROBOTECH movie. I have only seen a few episodes of the series that debuted in the 1980s, but for true fans I’m sure this has to have them more than a little curious. The idea for a big-screen version of the show has been floating around for years with Tobey Maguire attached to produce and possibly star at one point. Akiva Goldsman (A BEAUTIFUL MIND) and Lawrence Kasdan (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK) have tried unsuccessfully to get it going as well.

In the series, Robotechnology refers to the scientific advances discovered in an alien starship that crashed on a South Pacific island. With this technology, Earth developed robotic technologies, such as transformable mecha, to fight three successive extraterrestrial invasions.

Now Deadline reports that producers at Hollywood Gang, with Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton producing, have set Michael Gordon (300, G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA) to write the live-action ROBOTECH film. Reportedly, the producers want Andy Muschietti (MAMA) to direct the film.

I can't begin to vision what a big screen take on ROBOTECH would look like; that show did a lot of things that were outright crazy for early morning animation. It’s a sprawling sci-fi epic that might work better as an animated feature, but we all know how well those grown-up animated movies do at the box office.

Are you excited for a live version of Robotech to finally make it to the big screen?
