New featurette takes us behind-the-scenes of Stargate Origins

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Kicking off with Roland Emmerich's feature-film of the same name, the STARGATE franchise quickly grew larger with the addition of Stargate SG-1, a TV series which picked up where the film left off and spanned ten-seasons and several direct-to-DVD movies. Stargate Atlantis (five-seasons) and Stargate Universe (two-seasons) continued to expand the franchise, but when Stargate Universe was cancelled, the STARGATE series came to a grinding halt, with little being done to revive it. Although it's perhaps not the triumphant return which fans had in mind, a STARGATE web-series was announced earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con which would follow Catherine Langford, whose father was the one who first discovered the Stargate during an excavation in Egypt in 1928. A featurette has been released which showcases a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming series which, unfortunately, looks a little cheap. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the finished product gives us a little more.

Consisting of ten episodes clocking in at ten minutes each, Stargate Origins will "explore a brand new chapter in Catherine Langford’s early history surrounding the extraordinary portal. Young Catherine embarks on an unexpected adventure to unlock the mystery of what lies beyond the Stargate in order to save Earth from unimaginable darkness." The digital series will help to launch MGM's new subscription-based digital platform and fan experience, dubbed Stargate Command, which will be the exclusive home for Stargate Origins. My knowledge of the franchise is admittedly vague, but I'll be curious as to just what sort of unexpected adventures the young Catherine Langford will be able to get up to. It's my understanding that they weren't able to properly activate the Stargate until Daniel Jackson (James Spader) was able to crack the code in the first movie. Of course, this could easily be a case of "screw it, no one pays attention to continuity."
