The domestic release of Garth Davis’ MARY MAGDALENE with Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix may be up in the air, but international audiences will get to see the film next month. A new international trailer has just arrived, and it’s loaded with some of the positive reviews for the drama. The trailer explores the relationship between Jesus and Mary a bit more, emphasizing her huge role in the man's life, and teasing terrific performances from Mara and Phoenix.

Here is the plot synopsis:

MARY MAGDALENE is an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.

Davis reteamed with his LION cinematographer Craig Fraser, and the movie looks absolutely stunning and authentic. Magdalene had an immense impact on the life of Jesus, and her contribution has been diminished over the centuries by the male-dominated Church. This movie aims to tell her story in as realistic a way as possible, taking a different approach to the kind of Bible movies that normally hit theaters around Easter. No families talking about how special their kids are in this movie, no sir!

Sadly, we have no idea when audiences in the U.S. will get to see it as the fate of The Weinstein Company continues to be in jeopardy. Hopefully, we can see it by the end of the year over here, but for you folks overseas you can catch it on March 16.
