Rise of the Planet of the Apes director to helm Channing Tatum’s Gambit film

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Of all the X-Men stand-alone films heading our way, Channing Tatum's is probably the one fans are dreading most. Not that Taylor Kitsch did such an amazing job in X-MEN: ORIGINS, but Channing Tatum seems to be a little bit harder to swallow for die-hard fans of the character. In any event, Tatum has stated before his love for the character and his excitement to play him, so let's see if that translates well to the screen. Speaking of, we're one step closer now that a director has been found, and that director is Rupert Wyatt.

The man recently directed Mark Wahlberg in THE GAMBLER and is responsible for the successful reboot of the PLANET OF THE APES franchise with RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (that's the James Franco one). He'll be directing from a script from ROBOCOP screenwriter Josh Zetumer who recently turned in a first draft that Tatum described as, "killer."

Tatum has stated that they're looking to play with the usual tropes of comic book movies, but given that GAMBIT is supposed to hit after DEADPOOL, I think they're going to be beaten to the punch in a big way. I have nothing against Tatum playing the titular hero. I just hope that they can craft a unique story that works with the actor's strengths.

Rupert Wyatt's GAMBIT is scheduled to hit theaters on October 7, 2016.

I actually dug RISE more than its follow-up!
