Tom Hanks charms Emma Thompson in the first trailer for Saving Mr. Banks

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Tom Hanks is jumping into the shoes of Walt Disney in the new film SAVING MR. BANKS, which examines the “untold story” of the making of MARY POPPINS with the book’s author P.L. Travers, played by Emma Thompson. Directed by John Lee Hancock (THE BLIND SIDE), the Hollywood/Disney-themed film looks like an interesting trip into the making of the iconic musical, which looks to have been a bit of a challenge, especially with Travers being so tied to the material. It looks light, engaging, and fun with Hanks and Thompson no doubt bringing a lot of charisma and weight to the cultural icons.

Here’s the synopsis:

Author P.L. Travers travels from London to Hollywood as Walt Disney adapts her novel Mary Poppins for the big screen.

I’m surprised by this one. I didn’t expect to be as interested in this story, but when it comes to the making of Hollywood films I’m an obvious shoe-in. It’s a lot of fun to see the in’s and out’s of the making of a film, especially one that stands so prominently in the catalogue. It’s been awhile since Hanks knocked my socks off, although he was solid in CLOUD ATLAS and looks to bring his usual intensity to CAPTAIN PHILLIPS later this year.

SAVING MR. BANKS starts the production on December 13, 2013.
