The first trailer for SEVENTH SON, the new fantasy/action pic based on The Wardstone Chronicles series of books by author Joseph Delaney, has arrived. Starring Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes, Julianne Moore, Djimon Hounsou, Olivia Williams, Kit Harington, and MAN OF STEEL's Antje Traue, the pic is helmed by Russian filmmaker Sergey Bodrov (MONGOL: THE RISE OF GENGHIS KHAN) and looks to be like a cooler version of THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE with Bridges in the Nicolas Cage role and Ben Barnes in the Jay Baruchel role.

Check it out:

Here's the synopsis:

In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more. Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) is a knight who had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), centuries ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarnation, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory.

In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. Now he has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) to fight a dark magic unlike any other. Man's only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.

Looks pretty cool to me. It's got shades of many different genre pics/shows, including CLASH OF THE TITANS, HBO's Game of Thrones, and even a little CONAN THE BARBARIAN for good measure. Could be fun or derivative, but from the looks of it, I'm leaning toward the former.

SEVENTH SON will be a Comic Con this month, so look for more details soon, and will debut in theaters on January 17, 2014.
