What do you think about this list of characters that the SHIELD TV series is currently casting?

Avengers Samuel L. Jackson

I don’t know if we’ve written about any one movie more than we have THE AVENGERS, and that doesn’t look to be letting up any time soon as Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series progresses towards the start of production. Things are currently in the casting phase, and a character list for the Whedon-scripted pilot has been revealed.

Now before you get too worried because none of the characters listed are to be found in previously-published Marvel comics, many directors (Whedon included) use alternate character names when seeing actors so that the audition remains about the acting rather than being overshadowed by a name.  So while I wouldn’t be surprised to eventually discover that Whedon had invented a few new characters to add to Marvel’s universe, I also wouldn’t be surprisedto eventually discover a few familiar names once all is said and done.

That all being said (and done), what do you think about these characters and their descriptions? With Whedon at the helm (at least to start), could they make for some interesting times?

Skye: This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.

Agent Grant Ward: Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.

Agent Althea Rice: Also known as “The [Cavalry],” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

Agent Leo Fitz and Agent Jemma Simmons: These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

Cobie Smulders in a blue dress

I’m trying to break things up a bit by not using Scarlett Johansson again.  So… Cobie Smulders.
