Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno gets an official synopsis and first bloody image

Eli Roth has been a busy man, despite having not directed a new film since HOSTEL: PART II.  In the time since then, Roth has starred in Tarantino’s INGLORIOUS BASTERDS, written and/or produced THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS, AFTERSHOCK, and THE LAST EXORCISM PART II, as well as spearheading the Vegas attraction “Goratorium” and the new Netflix original series, Hemlock Grove. 

That’s a lot of work, for sure, but most have been clamoring for the director to get back behind the camera, bringing his intense, gore-filled horror back to the masses.  Well, the wait is over, as Roth is set to release THE GREEN INFERNO sometime this year, which looks to be the director’s take on the cannibal horror genre. 

Here’s the official synopsis:

A group of student activists from New York City travel to the Amazon to protect a dying tribe, but crash in the jungle and are taken hostage by the very natives they saved.

Along with the synopsis, Worldwide Entertainment has also released the first still from the film, which shows a blonde-haired college girl scared out of her mind as the natives overpower her and, by the looks of it, give her a little haircut.

I’m a big fan of the sick, twisted cannibal horror genre, if only for it’s shock value and base depravity. In many ways, I find it to be more horrifying than any other aspect of the genre, as you could easily picture yourself in that situation, rather than being chased by a werewolf or locked in the gaze of a sparkly vampire.  If anyone has the ability to create a something every bit as gore-tastic as the old Italian cannibal films, it’s Roth.  Just don’t eat any meat before heading to the theater.

THE GREEN INFERNO is slated for release sometime in 2013.
