Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara’s Buddy Comedy Starts Production

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara's untitled comedy (formerly titled DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS) is starting production this week in New Orleans. The female-driven comedy has been on the table for over a year so I suspect they have found time in the actress’s busy schedules to finally get it going. Anne Fletcher (THE PROPOSAL, THE GUILT TRIP) is directing the movie that pairs an uptight police officer played by Witherspoon trying to protect Vergara’s character, a “sexy and outgoing” widow of a drug lord, from corrupt cops and other armed men intent on killing her.

I’ll start the dialogue here by saying that a buddy action comedy with these two fine actresses would be something I’d like to see. The sub-genre has almost always been exclusive to males, but with massive hits like THE HEAT (and its inevitable sequel), it’s no wonder that studios are looking to pair up more women. The premise is similar to THE HEAT in that is stars two mismatch characters, but that’s how these buddy flicks usually work. Yet, I can still see the Oscar winner Witherspoon and the TV star Vergara bringing their own style and chemistry to the movie making something more original than some might think.

The projected release date is May 8, 2015, just in time for Mother’s Day!
