Antoine Fuqua may say hello to Universal’s Scarface remake

Antoine Fuqua has been coming on strong in recent years after seeing a bit of a downturn in his career following TRAINING DAY. But following the successes of OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN, THE EQUALIZER and SOUTHPAW and with a promising remake of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN on deck for September, Fuqua has once again become a filmmaker that studios want to work with, and so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to learn that Universal is ready to hand him the reins for their SCARFACE remake.

Fuqua is currently in talks with the studio to direct the third take on SCARFACE, which would take the premise of an immigrant rising to power from his meager beginnings into modern-day L.A. Jonathan Herman is the most recent writer credited with work on the script after both Paul Attanasio and David Ayer have taken cracks at the material in the past.

There is no timeframe on how quickly SCARFACE would get rolling towards production if Fuqua does come aboard, but, unlike many other tentpoles these days, Universal has been developing this reimagining for awhile now. It is certainly something they want to make and want to make well, so nothing about this feels rushed… and certainly the material has worked on two previous occasions, so Fuqua may be a step in the right direction to get the remake-weary audiences to be open-minded about the possibilities of a new SCARFACE.
