There is a ton of Doctor Who and Sherlock crossover fanfiction out there, but could a crossover episode between the two BBC shows actually happen? Some think it's a possibility since Steven Moffat is the showrunner for both series, and Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss is also a writer on Doctor Who. With the upcoming Sherlock special set in Victorian London and unconnected to the series, there could also be a crossover episode at some point, right?

While speaking with EW, Steven Moffat said he's open to a Doctor Who/Sherlock crossover, however there are others who don't think it is a good idea.

My instinct—and this is probably from years of doing Doctor Who—is I’m just such a tart. If people want to, we should give it to them. But I got persuaded by Mark, Benedict, [executive producer Sue Vertue] and Martin saying, “Look, it will never be as good as they think it’s going to be,” and then I say, “Yes, but we’ll just bang it out and make it as good.” “Yeah, but you can’t give everybody everything they want all the time.” I’m in the camp of giving them everything they want. But I think they’re sane and right and I’m just a tart.

Although I agree that a crossover episode probably wouldn't be as awesome as many people believe it would be, it does sound fantastic on paper. What do you think: Are Mark Gatiss, Sue Vertue, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman "sane and right" and Steven Moffat is just being a tart, or could a Doctor Who/Sherlock crossover work?

Peter Capaldi is currently filming his second season as the Doctor, and the Sherlock Christmas special episode will air sometime in December 2015.
