Stranger Things season three setting and character details emerge

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

The second season of STRANGER THINGS reaffirmed this show is indeed a pop culture phenomenon, and one we will be watching for years to come. Come this year (October, no doubt) we will get to witness the third season of the show, and today we finally have a few details about the new season in terms of setting and characters. Spoiler, there’s a lot of teenage feelings being thrown around.

The cast and crew of the show were on hand at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday to talk about their experiences on season two, and before the panel series producer, Shawn Levy, stopped to reveal some season three goodies (via THR). This includes the timeframe, with Levy saying the show will take place close to one year after the events of season two in the summer of 1985 with BACK TO THE FUTURE being a major reference in this season.

On top of that, Levy said the show will feature two young couples in Eleven and Mike (Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard) and Lucas and Max (Caleb McLaughlin and Sadie Sink).

Mike and Eleven and are going strong, so that’s a relationship that continues, and same with Mad Max and Lucas. But again, they’re like 13- or 14-year-old kids, so what does romance mean at that stage of life? It can never be simple and stable relationships and there’s fun to that instability.

Season two had audiences talking about so many aspects, like Jim Hopper’s (David Harbour) dad dance. But one of the more priceless elements of the season was the dynamic between Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) and Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), and Levy said there will indeed be more “Dad Steve” in season three.

We’ll definitely get to see some more of Steve Harrington in season three, and I’ll just say we won’t be abandoning the Dad Steve magic. I don’t want to say much more, but I literally feel that we were walking along and we stumbled onto a gold mine with Dad Steve.”

I didn’t love season two as much as some other people did, and found it dragged here and there and didn’t know what to do with all the characters (notably Mike). But I liked it nonetheless, and it had some great moments and aspects that I will love to see explored in season three. Finding out what that freaky interdimensional demon was doing hovering over a school like a creep is one of them.
