Ridley Scott has an idea for a third Blade Runner movie

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

BLADE RUNNER 2049 should be getting just as much awards attention as some of the major Best Picture contenders, but sadly it’s being kept strictly to the tech categories. Nothing wrong with those awards, and BLADE RUNNER deserves all of them. But the movie faded from people’s minds too quickly after it had a disappointing run at the box office, which will not only come out a loss for Warner Bros. but will probably hinder any chances of a third movie.

Still, that’s not stopping director Ridley Scott from cooking up new ideas. While promoting his new movie, ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD, the director was asked by Digital Spy if he thinks another BLADE RUNNER movie is possible and shared that he has an idea for the third movie that is ready to put into motion:

I hope so, I think there is another story. I’ve got another one ready to evolve and be developed, so there is certainly one to be done for sure.

The man may not be giving up details, but based on this quote he may be hinting that he’s willing to jump behind the camera again to helm the third flick (taking over for Denis Villeneuve). Scott surely strutted his feathers like a proud exotic bird recently, talking about how much of the ideas used for 2049 were his, and going as far as to say the final product was too long.

The movie has yet to hit Blu-ray, and so if it fares better on home release perhaps WB will consider making another entry in the series. However, the movie cost $150 million and only made $258 million globally, so that’s a long way out of the red. Scott may be cooking up ideas, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for a new movie anytime soon, which is a shame because the new movie deserved to be a smash. I don’t know, maybe all audiences want is more smashing robots and talking creatures. Got any ideas involving that stuff, Scott?

BLADE RUNNER 2049 is on Digitial now and hits Blu-ray January 16.
