Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman to pen new Labyrinth film

The timing of this particular announcement doesn't seem all that great, does it? Back in 1986 a little film called LABYRINTH was released starring Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie. It chronicled the quest of a young girl named Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) to reach the center of an enormous otherworldly maze to rescue her infant brother Toby, who has been kidnapped by Jareth, the Goblin King (David Bowie) after Sarah accidentally wished Toby away. The film was full of bizarre puppets, dance numbers, and David Bowie's bulge. It was also, unfortunately, a big disappointment at the box-office. However, LABYRINTH would go on to develop a large cult following after its release on home-video and introduce countless people to its magical wonders.

Just two weeks after the death of David Bowie, it has been announced that Tri-Star has closed a deal with the Jim Henson Co. to produce a new LABYRINTH film to be written by GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY co-writer Nicole Perlman. THR, who broke the news, have labelled the project as a "reboot," but Nicole Perlman announced on her Twitter that she wasn't "rebooting" anything.

Perlman's reply seems to indicate that the project will be a sequel, spin-off, or something else of that nature, and not a straight up reboot of LABYRINTH. The original film was the final feature-film to be directed by the late Jim Henson, and his daughter, Lisa Henson, will be producing this new LABYRINTH project. While I don't count myself as one of LABYRINTH's many fans (sorry), I can appreciate that this news may be a disappoint to some. If Jareth is still to be a part of this new film, who could possibly fill David Bowie's, lets say…shoes?
