Lucasfilm says there are still “multiple” Star Wars movies in the works

A few days ago a report came out that Lucasfilm was freezing several upcoming STAR WARS standalone/spinoff movies in carbonite, and that they would be focusing only on the current trilogy, Rian Johnson’s new trilogy and movies from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Turns out that may not be entirely correct, as Lucasfilm sources told ABC News they still have “multiple” new STAR WARS movies still in the works.

The news outlet reports the Lucasfilm sources are calling the original report “inaccurate,” and that they indeed have movies outside of the Johnson trilogy and Benioff/Weiss series that are in the works and moving forward. No specific projects are named, but in the past, we have heard about a Boba Fett movie from James Mangold and an Obi-Wan movie by Stephen Daldry.

The original report came in the wake of the performance of SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, which is the first official dud in the series' live-action canon. Made for the usual massive price tag of a blockbuster space adventure, the movie hasn't even made $200 million at the domestic box office yet and is tanking overseas with a $145 million total, coming to about $344 million globally. The movie is expected to lose Disney and Lucasfilm a few bucks, something no one thought would be said about a STAR WARS movie. 

Now, the original report from Collider may still be accurate, but the whole story may just not be as cut and dry as it looks. The reception and box office of SOLO may have forced Lucasfilm to rethink pieces of their strategy (as it should), possibly revaluating certain projects. However, this may not mean they’re looking to alter plans for all of their standalone movies, such as one for Obi-Wan, which is something fans seem to really want.  We won’t know for certain until Lucasfilm puts out an official statement, or until they *wink wink, nudge nudge* drop a massive announcement of future films on us via a massive Comic-Con presentation. No matter what happens, we still have a remake of THE LAST JEDI to look forward to.
