Daniel Day-Lewis announces he’s retiring from acting

Yep, you read that headline right, Daniel Day-Lewis has announced his retirement from acting. Winner of three Oscars, he was known for his versatility and intensity, as well as his willingness to go to extreme lengths for his roles (including learning new languages, confining himself to a wheelchair, or listening to Eminem).

According to Variety, no reason was given. A statement from Day-Lewis’ spokeswoman, Leslee Dart, had this to say:

Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject. 

Before we cry too loud, this apparently wouldn't be the first time he had quit acting, as he was reportedly working as a cobbler before being asked to join GANGS OF NEW YORK by Martin Scorsese himself. So there's still hope. However, after receiving three Oscars and working with the likes of Steven Spielberg and the aforementioned Martin Scorsese, he might just feel he's won acting? Not only that, but he has one more film coming out in December called PHANTOM THREADS – about the high stakes of the fashion industry – which will re-unite Lewis with THERE WILL BE BLOOD director Paul Thomas Anderson.
