Weekend Box Office Report: November 11-13, 2016

The box office remains Strange!

Marvel's marvelously mustachioed sorcerer stayed supreme this weekend, keeping DOCTOR STRANGE at number one with an estimated $43 million!

Benedict Cumberbatch's master of mystical arts dipped only 49% from a strong opening last weekend, bringing the latest chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a ten-day domestic total of $153 million.

The $165 million action-fantasy from director Scott Derrickson (SINISTER) is also at a worldwide total of nearly $500 million, passing the $370 million global finish of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER and the $449 million final tally of THOR.

The colorful singing TROLLS remained in second place with $35 million, a loss of only 25% from last weekend's opening. The PG-rated animated comedy has a ten-day domestic total of $94 million, contributing to its worldwide total of $222.2 million (on a reported $125 million cost).

Opening in third place was the new sci-fi movie ARRIVAL with $24 million. The PG-13 alien invasion thriller, directed by Denis Villeneuve (SICARIO) and starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, cost a reported $47 million.

Critics welcomed the mysterious extraterrestrial visitors with open arms, granting a 93% average on Rotten Tomatoes. (Check out the JoBlo review right HERE!)

In fourth place was the new holiday feature ALMOST CHRISTMAS with an opening of $15.5 million. The PG-13 comedy-drama with Gabrielle Union and Danny Glover only cost a reported $17 million, and received a 44% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes.

Director Mel Gibson's WWII movie HACKSAW RIDGE moved to fifth place with $10.7 million, dropping just 29% over the Veteran's Day weekend. The fact-based melodrama, featuring Andrew Garfield as pacifist combat medic Desmond Doss, has a ten-day domestic total of $32.2 million.

Ben Affleck's THE ACCOUNTANT continued counting cash in sixth place with $4.5 million, killing and calculating to a worldwide total of $128 million after five weekends in theaters.

The new Naomi Watts thriller SHUT IN opened in seventh place with $3.7 million. The $10 million tale of domestic terror was slammed by critics with the dreaded 0% average on Rotten Tomatoes. (Read the JoBlo review HERE.)

In eighth place was Tyler Perry's BOO! A MADEA HALLOWEEN with $3.5 million to reach a domestic total of $70.4 million after a month on screens. Tom Cruise's sequel JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK followed in ninth with $3.3 million, and the trilogy-topping Tom Hanks thriller INFERNO was just a dim flickering flame in tenth with $3.2 million.

Outside the chart, THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN left the station with OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL and MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN. In limited release, director Ang Lee's war drama BILLY LYNN'S LONG HALFTIME WALK had an excellent $60k per-screen average (in the two theaters presenting it in 4K/3D/120FPS before it expands next week), while Paul Verhoeven's new thriller ELLE got a decent $28k per-screen start. The interracial marriage drama LOVING expanded to 46 screens and made $532k.

Next weekend offers the anticipated Harry Potter spinoff FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM, along with the Miles Teller boxing drama BLEED FOR THIS and the comedy THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN.
