Weekend Box Office Report: September 18-20, 2015

The Scorch Trials run to #1!

Audiences went to the teenage wasteland this weekend to put MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS on top with an estimated $30.3 million!

The sequel, again based on author James Dashner's young-adult book series, took the runners out of the maze and into the harsh post-apocalyptic domain.

It didn't quite reach the $32.5 million opening of last September's THE MAZE RUNNER (which only cost a reported $34 million compared to SCORCH TRIALS' $61 million budget), but has already grabbed more than $100 million worldwide. The original ended with a global total of $340 million.

Opening in second was the R-rated crime story BLACK MASS with $23.3 million. Johnny Depp portrays notorious Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger, and the actor is collecting some of his best critical response in years (77% on Rotten Tomatoes) in director Scott Cooper's fact-based mob tale.

In third place was M. Night Shyamalan's R-rated thriller THE VISIT with $11.3 million, down one spot and 55% from its opening last weekend. The nightmare-grandparents horror story has gathered $42.3 million on a reported $5 million budget.

Dropping to fourth from its first-place debut was THE PERFECT GUY with $9.6 million, losing 62% of business from last week's opening. The PG-13 thriller has a $41.3 million 10-day total (and only cost a reported $12 million).

The mountain-climbing drama EVEREST got an IMAX-only release and climbed to fifth place with $7.5 million on 545 screens (a per-screen average nearly twice that of anything else in the Top 10). The fact-based thriller with Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin and a number of other familiar frozen faces opens wide next weekend.

In sixth was the religious melodrama WAR ROOM with $6.2 million, followed by the R-rated Robert Redford/Emma Thompson/Nick Nolte comedy A WALK IN THE WOODS with $2.7 million.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION was in eighth with $2.2 million, and a $191.7 million domestic total after two months on screens. It has also climbed to $656 million worldwide thanks to its recent China release.

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON was in ninth with another $1.9 million, and the new David Oyelowo/Kate Mara thriller CAPTIVE opened down at the bottom with $1.4 million on 800 screens.

Outside the chart, THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED skidded out with 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN and the Mexicanimation UN GALLO CON MUCHOS HUEVOS. The Emily Blunt drug thriller SICARIO opened in limited release with an excellent $65k per-screen average, while Marvel's ANT-MAN crossed $400 million worldwide.

Next weekend has Eli Roth's cannibal horror movie GREEN INFERNO, Adam Sandler's animated moster sequel HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2, the Anne Hathaway/Robert DeNiro comedy THE INTERN, and the expansion of EVEREST.
