Watch our Oscar “Best Picture” Retrospective for 1999 (video)

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

In this new series we take a look at the Oscar nominations of years past, examining the flicks that were nominated, as well as the pic we feel got snubbed among all the other candidates. Love ’em or hate ’em, the Oscars usually highlight the best films from each year (although there are plenty that get overlooked) and it’s always fun to look back and see what was popular for any given year and to contemplate their legacy in retrospect. This time we take a look at 1999’s nominees (for movies made in 1998), including Shakespeare in Love, Elizabeth with Cate Blanchett, Steve Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, Bernardo Bertolucci‘s Life is Beautiful, and Terrence Malick‘s The Thin Red Line, as well as our Snub Pick of the Year!

1999 Nominees (for films released in 1998):

– ELIZABETH
– SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
– LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL

– SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE
