Marvel’s Inhumans director on fan backlash and lackluster trailer offerings

If you count yourself among the many fans who were left feeling underwhelmed by the first trailer for Marvel's INHUMANS that debuted in June, you should know that the show's director, Roel Reine, stands beside you in shared bewilderment and frustration. 

Recently, Reine sat down with Metro – a United Kingdom based news outlet – to express his feelings on the failed first-footage of the upcoming series. As you know, Marvel's INHUMANS depicts the lauded comic book publisher's royal family featuring Black Bolt (Anson Mount), Maximus (Iwan Rheon) and Medusa (Serinda Swan) as its main players. After mixed opinions ran rampant on the net, and the debut trailer received over 38,000 dislikes on Youtube, Reine told Metro that he wasn't surprised by the reception because the  trailer's release was 'a little too early'.

Furthermore, Reine expressed his thoughts to Metro about the trailer by saying, "I was mixed about the first trailer as well. I felt like it didn’t give you the scope, it didn’t give you a lot of secrets or visual effects. I felt it was a little bit too early because the visual effects were not ready – Medusa’s hair was not ready. So I was really nervous about it and would think the fans would not really like it."

When asked if he was taken aback by the fan's negative reaction to the trailer Reine responded by saying, "When I watched the first trailer I was like ‘ooosh’. But me as a filmmaker, as a director, you’re not involved with the marketing part of these things. The trailer was made by other people, so I was really nervous about it when I saw it. So I was like, “oh guys maybe we should hold off,” but it was too late because it was already in the open."

Then, when the second trailer for Marvel's INHUMANS made its San Diego Comic Con debut, Reine enthusiastically stated, "I’m very happy we kind of changed it around. The second trailer really got all the fans back on track and they really like it now and they really want to see it. I was really happy with that second trailer."

Mmm, I don't know if all Marve fans are on-board with this one, Reine. As an avid comic book reader of the Inhumans group, you and your team have got quite a bit of work cut out for you before what I've seen in either trailer can hold a flickering candle to the source material. Perhaps it's unfair to judge the show when all we've seen so far are two brief trailers, but for me, Marvel's INHUMANS looks surprisingly boring. Then again, perhaps I shouldn't be surprised seeing as the program hails from the same showrunner as Marvel's IRON FIST – which is by far Marvel's most divisive Netflix series offering to date. 

For now, the first two episodes of Marvel's INHUMANS will debut on September 1st in IMAX cinemas, with the full series set to crawl out of the Terrigen Mists with an air date of September 29th on ABC.
