TV Review: Game of Thrones, Season 6, Episode 7 “The Broken Man”

EPISODE 7: The Broken Man

THE PLOT : Winter is coming, and with it, the white walkers. If those still standing don’t band together soon, the iron throne may become a throne of ice.

THE LOWDOWN: (The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don’t recommend reading this if you haven’t watched this episode). The night is dark and full of terror. Let’s start with the return of The Hound. This was something I was hoping for since we last saw him with Arya. Because of his relationship with her, I’d hoped we’d see him again, and let’s be honest, in Game of Thrones, if you don’t physically see someone die (and sometimes even if you do), there’s a good chance they could pop back up. And who better to usher this character back into the fold than Ian McShane—someone I never thought I’d see on this show. McShane is awesome, and though he wasn’t meant for a long stay in Westeros, he steals the show as you might well imagine. The episode’s ending is obvious, but I have to wonder why the Brotherhood is killing innocents? There was absolutely no call for killing those people, but it’s ironically hilarious at the same time (not the killing part), seeing as how the Brotherhood had a run in with The Hound once before. He wasn’t a fan then, and he’s clearly not a fan now. I’m looking forward to the ensuing bloodbath.

My faith in King’s Landing is somewhat renewed by Margaery’s actions tonight. As I’d hoped, she’s not under the Sparrow’s spell after all (hopefully the King isn’t either). She’s plotting something, and I’m assuming that something will revolve around taking down the Sparrow and getting her brother out of jail. It’s a dangerous game to be sure, but I’m intrigued. It’s Granny Tyrell who’s on fire though, ripping Cersei a new ass. Talk about not holding back! You can tell it is taking all of Cercei’s willpower to not have The Mountain cleave the old bag in two. Not only does she point out Cercei’s stupidity (repeatedly), but to rub her nose in it by saying her failure is this mess’ only upside? Talk about some hard truth. I couldn’t help but laugh.

Jon, Sansa and Davos’ quest for numbers is daunting. The landscapes are beautiful though, I just wish I could say the same for northern hospitality. A lot of mixed emotions, and I’m not exactly surprised. I’m even less surprised to see her eyeing those raven’s at the end. Is she writing to Littlefinger? You know she is. Will he get it, or will it be intercepted? Well, it is Game of Thrones so it’ll be intercepted by Ramsay, but when the battle seems lost, Littlefinger and The Vale will swoop in and save the day because (drum roll) Sansa sent more than one raven! I don’t care about any of that, so long as Jon kills that motherf*cker. Oh, and I really hope Tormond doesn’t die. On a side note, Brienne is on her way to see The Blackfish, leading me to think she’ll cross paths with Jaime, which hopefully won’t go the way I think it will.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON 6’s seventh episode is revving the engine pretty loud, so I’m thinking we’re about to get some huge fireworks. Despite not much happening at Riverrun, it’s quite a sight to behold. For one, that’s a large army Jaime and Bronn brought with them, but the real entertainment came from the intensity. We haven’t seen The Blackfish since The Red Wedding, something Jaime was largely responsible for, so seeing The Blackfish seething with anger comes as no surprise. Surrender the castle? Seriously Jaime, you really thought there was a chance in hell of that happening? And to YOU of all people? That fight will NOT end pretty. Lastly, it pains me to see Arya seemingly lose everything. It has to be a trick right? IT HAS TO BE! I’m hoping against hope that it’s the other girl who is being set up to be killed by Arya as a final test, but yes, that’s me grasping at straws. She better not die, that’s all I’m saying. Oh, and I’m liking Yara’s idea to make a pact with Danny. I’m very interested to see how Tyrion and Varys weigh in on that conversation.

SEX/NUDITY: Yara and crew stop for some titties and beer, and there’s lots of both.

VIOLENCE: The Hound’s return is drenched in blood, but that’s nothing compared to how much is coming. Arya is mortally wounded and bleeding out—but it’s a trick I tell you!

MOST EPIC SCENE: Jaime and The Blackfish’s conversation was beyond awesome, I could feel the hair on my arms tingling.
