Weekend Box Office Report: June 24-26, 2016

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

Another huge weekend for Finding Dory!

Pixar's friendly little blue fish was able to tread water at #1 for a second weekend as FINDING DORY prevailed at the box office with an estimated $73.2 million!

The sequel to FINDING NEMO dropped only 46% from its opening last week and has reached a 10-day domestic of $286.5 million, which puts it on track to pass the $403 million of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and become the biggest domestic hit of the year so far. FINDING DORY has also reeled in $110 million from international audiences for a worldwide total of $396 million.

Moviegoers clearly didn't have the same level of nostalgia for alien invaders that they did for rampaging dinosaurs last summer as INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE went rather quietly into the night, opening with $41.6 million.

That's less than the $50.2 million opening of director Roland Emmerich's original INDEPENDENCE DAY when it descended into theaters 20 years ago. (Emmerich's last global annihilation event 2012 ended up grossing $166 million domestic but made $769 million worldwide.)

RESURGENCE has a worldwide total of $143 million on a reported production cost of $165 million (with rumors suggesting that the budget was closer to $200 million). The Will Smithless sequel wasn't screened early for critics, and currently hovers at 33% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Kevin Hart/Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson action-comedy CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE came in third place with $18.3 million, down 48% from its second-place opening last week. Its 10-day domestic total is up to $69.3 million on a reported $50 million cost.

The new Blake Lively-versus-shark thriller THE SHALLOWS opened in fourth place, chomping down $16.7 million. The latest from director Jaume Collet-Serra (HOUSE OF WAX, NON-STOP) only cost a reported $17 million, and the PG-13 aquatic survival tale waded to a 74% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes.

Opening in fifth place was the new action-drama FREE STATE OF JONES with $7.7 million. The R-rated Civil War story (which cost a reported $50 million) came from writer-director Gary Ross (PLEASANTVILLE, THE HUNGER GAMES) and stars Matthew McConaughey, but that pedigree didn't impress critics — the movie has a 40% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

The R-rated horror sequel THE CONJURING 2 was in sixth with $7.7 million and has now scared up $242 million worldwide. The magician sequel NOW YOU SEE ME 2 was behind it in seventh with $5.6 million for a current worldwide total of $159 million, not even halfway to the surprise $351 million global finish of the first movie.

In eighth place, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE has managed to pass the $146 million domestic total of X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, the previous lowest-grossing mutant team movie (although APOCALYPSE does have a worldwide total of $523 million to make it the third biggest in the franchise from a global perspective). Underperforming duo TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS and ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS closed out the list.

Outside the chart, the videogame adaptation WARCRAFT departed after two weeks in the Top 10, unplugging with just $43 million domestic but over $400 million worldwide. The romantic drama ME BEFORE YOU also rolled out of sight, along with CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR after two months in theaters.

In limited release, the Daniel Radcliffe farting-corpse comedy SWISS ARMY MAN had a strong $38k per-screen average, while Nicolas Winding Refn's new thriller THE NEON DEMON opened on 783 screens for $606k, amounting to a per-screen average of only $775 (for comparison, the thriller EYE IN THE SKY just had a per-screen average of $559 on its sixteenth weekend in theaters).

Next weekend, director Steven Spielberg delivers a tall tale with THE BFG, Alexander Skarsgard swings for Margot Robbie in THE LEGEND OF TARZAN, and it's time for more legally allowed homicide in THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR.
