What will you be watching this weekend? (October 5)

Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday we’d like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.

So what’s on your movie agenda this weekend? Here’s what I’m thinking about watching…

IN THEATERS…

Man, when will people learn that Liam Neeson is not a man you want to screw with?

Seriously, the dude is such a bonafide badass with that he has own musical now! In TAKEN Neeson’s character with a “certain set of skills” goes to work on the morons who thought kidnapping his daughter was a good idea. It didn’t work out so hot for them, but if at first you don’t succeed why not just kidnap Neeson’s wife for TAKEN 2? Honestly I don’t care how or why the baddies get on the wrong side of Liam Neeson’s fury since I’m always down for some righteous brutality. Although, I do have to wonder what the plot of a completely theoretical Taken 3 (thus completing the “Takenilogy” ™) will have. Will they steal Liam’s dog and hold it for ransom? Because I’d totally watch that too! But does TAKEN 2 live up to the awesomeness of the first installment? Check out Chris Bumbray’s review right here.

It’s that special time of the year for spooks, specters and ghouls and since nobody can make something that looks creepy make you feel warm inside like Tim Burton I pretty excited to check out his full-lengthed version of his 1984 FRANKENWEENIE short. While it has become kind of easy to dismiss some of Burton’s recent fare the fact that he is kind of going back to his roots with FRANKENWEENIE is enough to get my butt in the seat.

ON TELEVISION…

Last weekend gave us a solid season opener for Showtime’s DEXTER. It’s become clear to me that each season of the show is only as good as serial killer Dexter Morgan’s adversary and in the final minutes when they finally revealed who that just may be I did a fist pump of utter delight. Season 7 is off to a good start with some solid subplots already forming and seeds from previous starting to bear juicy fruit.

Did you hear that James Bond is hosting SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE?! Yeah, I’m pretty damn excited to see Daniel Craig flex his comedic muscle on SNL this weekend because I don’t think I’ve ever seen the dude really cut loose in a movie. If you know of one please mention it below because that’s a flick I want to see. He definitely can pull off dry wit but what about improv comedy? The fact that Muse is the musical guest is just icing on the cake.

As we found out earlier today this weekend’s episode of The Discovery Channel’s MYTHBUSTERS will feature a hotly debated topic from James Cameron’s TITANIC. Could Jack and Rose could both survive on the floating wreckage instead of just one. Oops! Retroactive Spoiler Alert! Ever one to search for the truth James Cameron himself will stop by to theorize with the MYTHBUSTERS crew. Also, I’ve heard something about a rocket’powered surfboard … and that frankly sounds too ridiculously awesome to miss.

 

ON DVD & BLU-RAY…

If you like classic Universal monster flicks (how can you not?!) then you’re going to want this awesome new 8-disc “UNIVERSAL CLASSIC MONSTERS: THE ESSENTIAL COLLECTION” on Blu-ray. Just in time for the obligatory horror movie marathons this month the set includes DRACULA (1931, both the English and Spanish cut!), FRANKENSTEIN(1931), THE MUMMY (1932), THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933), THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935), THE WOLF MAN (1941), THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1943) and my personal favorite THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (1954) in newly remastered “Special Editions” absolutely replete with special features. 

Just a friendly heads up on the UNIVERSAL CLASSIC MONSTERS set; you can get a Region-Free version from Amazon.UK for about half the price! It’s the same flicks with the same special features but it’ll keep a bit of extra green in your pocket for Halloween booze.

While I missed Tim Burton’s take on DARK SHADOWS during it’s theatrical run I heard it was a pretty fun flick so I’ll probably rent it and give it a try on Blu-ray. Johnny Depp rarely disappoints and I definitely appreciate they decided to set it in the 1970’s instead of going fully modern, if only for what I imagine is a kickass classic rock and disco-infused soundtrack.
