Invincible director Ericson Core to direct remake of Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break

100 percent pure bullshit! Yeah, we’ve heard rumblings of a POINT BREAK remake for a while now, with the likes of SPEED’s Jan DeBont in the mix at one point, but now it appears that Alcon studios is pushing forward with the venture, hiring INVINCIBLE director Ericson Core to helm it. Kurt Wimmer (EQUILIBRIUM) wrote the script, which takes the “extreme” aspect of the original to the next level, by incorporating it “in the world of international extreme sports” with an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a crime ring.

Now, there’s sure to be someone to step up and say that 1991’s POINT BREAK was just a silly action movie and that there’s no reason to get into a twist over this. However, no one ever said it wasn’t silly. It’s most certainly a kick ass, over-the-top, high-adrenaline actioner with some really great performances from all involved, including the late Patrick Swayze as surfing guru (and bank robber) Bohdi and Keanu Reeves as special agent Johnny Utah. Oh, and let’s not forget Gary Busey. If nothing else, the original POINT BREAK is one of the finer examples of an action film, especially from that era.

So, why in the hell does it need to be remade? The short answer; it doesn’t. I actually enjoyed Core’s INVINCIBLE more than I thought I would, but that’s not the best indicator that he’s the man for the job. No one is, because it’s not a job that needs to be done. But, we can bitch all we want and it’s still going to happen. Could a cast add some merit? Possibly. Can the original be topped? Not f*cking likely.

Shooting begins on POINT BREAK later this year.
