Watchoo Watchin'?!

Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday we’d like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.

So let us know what’s on your movie agenda this weekend! Here’s what I’m thinking about watching…

IN THEATERS…

LotR MarathonAs I was scanning the marquee of my local theater it appeared that the only new release was PLAYING FOR KEEPS, some sappy sportscentric romantic comedy starring Gerard Butler as a youth soccer coach whose greatest concern seems to be fending off soccer moms. While I can find something to appreciate in any movie that also stars Jessica Biel I thought all was lost for a weekend at the movies but what I saw next gave me hope …

This Saturday my local theater is having a LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY marathon and yes, it’s the extended editions!

Now I’m seriously considering spending 12 hours and 17 minutes of my weekend (crucial bathroom breaks included) in Middle Earth subsisting on Mountain Dew, popcorn and Red Vines. With THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY drawing closer I feel like this is something I must do. I have had my own LOTR marathons over the years, but that was from the comfort of my own couch, this is going to be the big leagues and I better start preparing my mind, body and spirit for it now or it could break me. Will it be healthy? No, but more importantly; will it be epic? F*ck and yes!

On a related note; while THE HOBBIT doesn’t hit screens until next weekend our own Chris Bumbray has already experienced it, so ramble on over here to check out the official JoBlo review!

ON TELEVISION…

DexWith only two episodes left in this season of DEXTER I almost thought they were setting us up for something of an anticlimactic ending. But that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore now that Dex’s new squeeze is under the scrutiny of his police lieutenant/boss/sister and that’s just the trouble that he knows about. A couple of other interested parties seem intent on reopening the Bay Harbor Butcher case and they are starting to suspect that it was Dexter all along. The next couple of episodes could determine how the final season of DEXTER plays out next year and I have a feeling it won’t have a happy ending.

I think my most anticipated movie in December also happens to be one of the last on the slate but I won’t have to wait until DJANGO UNCHAINED to see Jamie Foxx as he’s hosting SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE this weekend along with musical guest Ne-Yo. Foxx can be hilarious, his early sketches on Jamie Foxx is Wanda Wayne IN LIVING COLOR still make me laugh, but it has been a while since I have seen him really flex his comedic chops. Bring the funny Foxx!

With BOARDWALK EMPIRE now finished for the season and THE WALKING DEAD now on a mid-season hiatus (AMC, why you gotta tease?!) now would be an opportune time for me to check out some new shows. I’m open to suggestions so let me know what I have been missing out on below in the strikebacks.

ON DVD & BLU-RAY…

TDK TRILOGY BDWe’ve got all kinds of great choices on the home front this week ranging from a masked vigilante to a not so funny clown fish.

I saw THE DARK KNIGHT RISES three times in theaters and I still don’t think I have picked up all of the nuances of Christopher Nolan‘s Batman trilogy capper. While it didn’t blow me away like THE DARK KNIGHT did it has left an impression on me and the more I think about it the more I see it as a solid way for Christian Bale to end his tenure as Bats. It’s out this week on DVD and Blu-ray but for the completionists there is also THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY boxed set that is loaded with more extras than Batman’s utility belt.

Pixar makes animated gold. That is just a commonly known fact at this point and back in 2003 they did it with FINDING NEMO. Now almost a ten years and a 3D theatrical re-release later FINDING NEMO finally came to Blu-ray! I firmly believe this to be a modern masterpiece and I have no intention to wait another ten years to rewatch it. It’s also available on Blu-ray 3D, I bet that’ll look amazing.

Truth be told I’m not a big horror buff, I enjoy scare flicks in moderation but I don’t usually actively seek out new horror releases. I’m making an exception though for V/H/S, which is out on DVD and Blu-ray this week but sadly not in the titular format. I dig the idea of short horror vignettes within a larger film that allows for collaboration between several directors, including Ti West the man behind last year’s THE INNKEEPERS which I thoroughly enjoyed.
