Warner Bros’ I am Legend is getting a reboot

I am Legend Francis Lawrence Will Smith Alice Braga Banner

Ever since I AM LEGEND hit theaters and grossed over $500 million worldwide, Warner Bros. has been trying to figure out a way to do another movie, which isn't the easiest task considering how the Will Smith film ended. At one point there was talks of a prequel, but according to Deadline, the next I AM LEGEND movie will now be a reboot.

The site has also learned the reboot will not star Will Smith, and it will be based on a retrofitted spec script written by former iPhone salesman Gary Graham called A GARDEN AT THE END OF THE WORLD. Apparently Graham's Blacklist script (which has been described as "a sci-fi version of John Wayne’s THE SEARCHERS") and I AM LEGEND have similar themes and mythology, so…why not, right?

My question is why is Warner Bros. so desperate to make another I AM LEGEND? I know it made a ton of money for the studio back in 2007, but a lot of that was because of Will Smith's star power. Even with Smith, I'm not sure how well a sequel or prequel would perform, and without the actor I'm even less confident about its box office potential.

What are your thoughts on Warner Bros. developing an I AM LEGEND reboot?
