New Line could lose the movie rights to Y: The Last Man if production doesn’t start soon

Last January Dan Trachtenberg (the PORTAL: NO ESCAPE short) signed on to direct a big screen version of the Brian K. Vaughan comic Y: THE LAST MAN (with David S. Goyer producing) and in June, Goyer said, "We’ve got a script that’s as close as it’s ever been, so knock on wood. That could go into production next year." However, since then there hasn't been any news about the project. So what's going on with Y: THE LAST MAN? Is it still going to happen?

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Brian K. Vaughan was asked to give an update on Y: THE LAST MAN, and according to Vaughan, production better start soon, or the movie rights for the comic are going to revert back to him and co-creator Pia Guerra.

"It's my understanding that the rights to "Y: The Last Man" will revert back to co-creator Pia Guerra and me for the first time in a decade if the planned New Line adaptation doesn't start shooting in the next few months, so I expect there will be some "Y" news in 2014 either way."

I guess the big question is what are New Line's plans for Y: THE LAST MAN? Are they still going forward with Dan Trachtenberg directing, or are they exploring other options? And will New Line be able to start work on Y: THE LAST MAN before they lose the rights, or will they let it slip away? Like Vaughan said though, we should be hearing some Y: THE LAST MAN news either way sometime in the next few months.
