Star Trek: Discovery to boldly go with a September premiere date & more!

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Are you ready to boldly go into a new STAR TREK television series? Well, mic check your communicators, make sure you don't wear anything the color red, and prepare to board STAR TREK: DISCOVERY beginning on Sunday, September 24th, with a special broadcast premiere on the CBS TV network which is set to air from 8:30-9:30 PM. Additionally, the first and second episode of the series will be available on-demand on CBS All Access that same night promptly after the broadcast premiere. After the launch, new episodes are set to be released on All Access each Sunday.

Ah, it's nice to finally have a starting date for this show, right? As you may recall, STAR TREK: DISCOVERY was originally slated for a January 2017 release, but was then pushed back to May, and then even more so into Autumn. As part of the explanation for all the shifting about, CBS announced that the first season was expanding by two more episodes, and needed more time for filming and production. Now, the 15 episode first season will be split up into two parts. The first eight episodes will run from Sunday, Sept. 24 through Sunday, Nov. 5. The season will then take a brief sabbatical, and resume with the second chapter in January 2018.

Furthermore, CBS Studios International will also ready STAR TREK: DISCOVERY for a Netflix release in 188 countries including Canada as a part of Bell Media's Space station and OTT service Crave. That's good news, eh?

For Trekkies and fans of exploratory sci-fi, STAR TREK: DISCOVERY is sort of a big deal. As we've previously learned, STAR TREK: DISCOVERY will follow the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation.

The new action and exploration program stars Jason Isaacs as Captain Lorca, Captain of the Starship Discovery. Rounding out the cast will be Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham, along with James Frain, Terry Serpico, Maulik Pancholy, Sam Vartholomeos, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif and Mary Chieffo.

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY begins on Sunday, September 24th, with a special broadcast premiere on the CBS TV network which is set to air from 8:30-9:30 PM.
