What's new on Blu-ray and DVD this month? May 2016 banner

A new month brings a wealth of new Blu-ray and DVD releases, so now's a great time to play catch-up and see what we have ahead of us in May! You can always head to our BLU-RAY AND DVD RELEASE DATES section for a more complete list, but in this column we'll go over some of the more popular titles hitting shelves over the next 5 weeks!

May 3rd

If you're looking to get your Young Adult fix now that HUNGER GAMES is said and done, THE 5TH WAVE may scratch that itch, featuring Chloe Moretz. However, if you'd just get your hands on Jennifer Lawrence (so to speak), David O. Russell's JOY also his shelves this week. If neither of those pique your interest, perhaps you'd like to prep yourself for the long-awaited INDEPENDENCE DAY sequel with the 20th anniversary release of the original! After all, you just can't beat a 'Will Smith welcome!'

May 10th

One of the most successful comic book films of all time, DEADPOOL, hits Blu-ray this week in what's sure to be a top seller. Now we can all sit at home with chimichangas in hand and enjoy the movie that thankfully didn't suck! If you're feeling something more horrific, we also have the release of REGRESSION, featuring Ethan Hawke and Hermione herself, Emma Watson. If that's not creepy enough, perhaps taking care of a life-sized doll will make your skin crawl, as you'll witness in the Blu-ray release of THE BOY. Seriously, that doll can go eff himself!

I may not remember every plot thread of the third season of Orange is the New Black, but I DO remember Ruby Rose, as I'm sure a lot of other folks will when picking up this Blu-ray release! Also on hand is one of the best slow-burn horror flicks of our time, THE WITCH. If you're looking for something a little more lighthearted, perhaps the Robert De Niro and Zac Efron vehicle, DIRTY GRANDPA, will fare a little better with its home release.

May 24th

From what I hear, Chris Pine's finest hours are not in the film THE FINEST HOURS, but you can decide for yourself with the film hits Blu-ray on the 24th. If you're feeling a little nostalgic for Blue Steel, ZOOLANDER 2 also arrives in stores the same day. We also have Kevin Reynolds' (WATERWORLD, ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THEVES) RISEN hitting Blu-ray, as well as the rom-com HOW TO BE SINGLE. Something tells me if you have that movie in your library, you're well on your way! Hey-O!

May 31st

Lily James owned the role of Cinderella, and now you can watch her flex her action muscle with PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES. John Hillcoat's (LAWLESS, THE ROAD) crime story, TRIPLE 9, also hits home if you're looking for a stellar ensemble cast that includes the likes of Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson and Kate Winslet, just to name a few. We also have Alex Proyas' eyesore of a movie, GODS OF EGYPT, coming home. If you're asking me, I'm thinking that flick looks ripe for a drinking game!
