Tobey feels Afterburn Mar. 26, 2008
Source: Variety by: Dave Davis

We don't know if Tobey Maguire will spin his webby wrist-jizz again as SPIDER-MAN, but he's still perusing the comic book shelves.

Peter Parker's alter-ego will produce and presumably star in an adaptation of the new comic series AFTERBURN, from Red 5 Comics. Cacophony craftsman Neal Moritz (XXX, FAST AND THE FURIOUS) will also produce, practically ensuring overkill visuals and crap-rock soundtrack.

The post-apocalyptic story is set some time after a massive solar flare has charred the planet, and treasure hunters take advantage of the situation to seek priceless artifacts like the Mona Lisa and Crown Jewels (and food, one imagines).

The project marks another instance of the online community getting closer to the movie biz -- the comic is written by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood (TheForce.net and ComingSoon.net). Huzzah!

Extra Tidbit: Don't be surprised if Red 5's book ATOMIC ROBO is the next to get snapped up for feature treatment...

MAGUIRE
Just like Raimi, I like the idea of Tobey seeking different roles other than the wall-crawlling superhero he's portrayed in three films, even though I can't see anybody else playing the web slinger other than Tobey, the plot of the film sounds interesting and could make up for a good film, I'll be on the look out for this one.

AND ONE OTHER THOUGHT...
They're "seeking" the Mona Lisa? Couldn't I just tell them where it is and just save my $10 to get into the theater? It's in PARIS!!! Or is someone else alive and they stole it first. The plot thickens...

ALSO...
Why would there still be people in order to actually look for the mona lisa. I mean really? Where were they hiding not to get charred along with the planet. And what would they do with the paintings when half the world is gone? ok im over analyzing this. Seems like it would make a cool movie.

WHAT?
Maybe it's just me, but if a solar flare charred the planet, wouldn't the Mona Lisa be burnt up real good?
