Ah, Tim Burton must be having a ball working on SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET. Because I'm pretty sure there's nothing he loves more than studios making him compromise on his artistic vision. Apparently the early footage of the movie has been so extremely graphic (read: bloody) that execs are requesting the film be re-cut. As it stands, the film would currently receive an R-rating, whereas the studio would prefer a PG-13:
“Tim’s not happy that the studio is asking for so many cuts to the cutting, as it were,” someone connected to the film told the Daily Mail. “The thing is, the studio really likes the film and they want to make it accessible to as big an audience as possible - which means stemming the blood flow. But that’s a bit difficult for a story involving a guy who gets high slitting throats.”
All we need now is for Kevin Smith to claim he has read Burton's ending and that he actually had the idea first. That should be enough to send Burton into a mega meltdown and some years later, an entertaining VH1 special.
If you don't know, the movie is based on an old 19th Century legend about a man who uses his front as a barber to kill all the people that have ever done him wrong, while his mistress Mrs. Lovett uses their bodies to make 'the worst pies in London'.
Extra Tidbit:
Smith actually touched on SWEENEY TODD, in his underrated movie JERSEY GIRL. Perhaps there's something there?

WHAT A JOKE!
Warner Bros. must be out of their mind. Making Sweeney Todd PG-13 is not only inane but it takes away from the vision that Burton wants to bring to the screen. What a farce. If they go through with this, i will certainly wait for the director's cut when it comes on DVD. |

Just let him do it the way he wants! For fucks sake! He's the director! I think Burton knows what he's doing. He's done R rated stuff before and it was great. I love, Burton and I know he wont backdown.
Why can't movies be the way they used to be? I remember watching my favorite Burton film, it had it all: death, crude hilarious humor, slit throats, cussing, a whore house.... oh yeah and necrophilia. This movie was also rated PG. That movie is, Beetle Juice. |

A FURTHER DISCLAIMER
Warner Bros has no jurisdiction over Sweeney Todd's domestic distribution, although it IS (I believe) the international distributer.
Last but not least, this has NOT BEEN VERIFIED. The Daily Mail is a British tabloid, and thus should be taken with skepticism. The NY Post article and all other sources are simply quoting from DM and making assumptions based on it. |

DON'T BELIEVE DAILY MAIL
Um, the Daily Mail is not the most reliable or accurate source for material like this as they are a tabloid (meaning take it all with a grain of salt). Secondly, the actual article doesn't mention ANYTHING about R or PG-13, but instead mentions the British ratings 18 (closer to an NC-17 in the US) and 15 (closer to an $ in the US). |

Fuck the studios! Everyone knows that "they want to make it accessible to as big an audience as possible" means "we want to make LOTS of money!"
But these idiot studio heads are so blinded by greed they can't see that doing shit like this turns people OFF from seeing the movie!
I have faith in Tim Burton, though. He's not going to let the studio ruin his film. |

I'M SO SICK OF IT...
I've become so sick of studios fucking up director's visions that its sad but I'm used to it. It's like a breath of fresh air when before a preview for a movie I think looks interesting actually has a decent and deserved rating for it. (Especially when I see "R" these days). |
