WEEKEND BOX-OFFICE

It's
a dog-eat-dog world...

Four brand spankin' new movies opened this past
weekend, but none apparently elicited enough interest to
dethrone the great BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA from the top spot at
the box-office. QUARANTINE got the closest in 2nd place and
approximately $14M in receipts, but surprisingly the combined
power of director Ridley Scott and actors Leonardo DiCaprio and
Russell Crowe did nothing for most audiences, as BODY OF LIES only
managed a 3rd place opening, with only a little over $13M in
receipts.
I'm personally a fan of all three gentlemen, but
have to say that the film's promotions did nothing for me in terms
of generating any true passion for the film. It basically looked
like a smash-up of movies like SPY GAME and SYRIANA, with very
little that really stood out in the film's posters, trailers or
clips. The reviews
have also been pretty half-half on the film, but that
certainly won't prevent me from seeing it on DVD one day. The film
is considered a "flop" right now, because it cost about
$70M to produce (although some say that it cost even more!).
QUARANTINE, on the other hand, apparently only
cost $12M, so don't be surprised if a Q2 comes out next year or
REC2 or whatever the f*ck they're gonna call it. Universal's THE
EXPRESS did okay business, opening in 6th place with about $5M
bucks, while the week's fourth and final new release, CITY OF
EMBER, couldn't get arrested. It opened in 10th place with a touch
over $3M. PRINCE CASPIAN kinda proved this already, but methinks
the whole "fantasy film" resurgence is kinda dead at
this point. Any studio that is dumping hundreds of millions of
dollars into another "talking lion" movie might want to
double-check that amount with their accountants.
Next week sees the
release of 3 new films including W.
about the life and times of one George W. Bush, President of these
current United States, MAX
PAYNE, a videogame adaptation starring Markie Mark and the
always-delectable Mila Kunis, as well as SEX
DRIVE, a film about young men and the tremendous power that
their penises hold over them as human beings. So what's
your take on W, the movie? VOTE

What I mean by a cheap is scare is someone bumping into the killer but it turns out to be a lamp or something complete with a loud sound effect. That's what I mean by cheap scares. There were no false climaxes. |

FANTASY FILMS
1. I'm not sure it's fair to judge the state of the fantasy genre on the performance of City of Ember, since it isn't necessarily your typical kid's fantasy film (i.e. no magic, mythical creatures or talking animals). Having read the book it's probably closer to science fiction. In his review Ebert said that it reminded him of a kiddified version of Dark City. Maybe I'm nit-picking, but I don't think it appealed to the typical fantasy crowd.
2. I love a well done fantasy flick, but have to admit the studios jumped on the fantasy bandwaggon prematurely. The only ones that have made big bucks are LOTR, Harry Potter and the first Narnia. That's because these books are well known to mainstream audiences(i.e. have tens of millions of pre-established fans). There's really nothing to compare to these three series in terms of popularity. The next closest thing would've probably been Eragon or Golden Compass but they tried tried and they didn't work (although Golden Compass might've if not for the religious right, since it did well everywhere else).
3. Still, it is possible to turn a profit on a fantasy movie. Eragon, Golden Compass, Bridge to Terabithia, and the Spiderwick Chronicles all made right around $70 Million. In the cases of some of these that meant a profit, epesically when the worldwide numbers were figured in. It's possible to do a decent looking fantasy flick with a few big names for under $100M (look at Stardust), heck Pan's Labyrinth was done for $20M (although it was produced outside the U.S.). The numbers are pretty consistant. If the studios would just quit showing off how much money they have they could actually turn a profit with most of these.
That being said I'm sure big budget fantasy films won't be going away any time soon. The release of the Hobbit and the last few Potter films will re-ignite interest in the genre and the studios will be greedy enough to try to find the "next big thing" even if it goes against their better judgement. |

+1 FOR QUARANTINE
I don't know what audience you were with, JohnLocke2342, but the audience I saw Quarantine with loved the film. The film does seem to be an interesting one though, in that half the people are hating it, while half are loving it, from what I've seen online. I actually did not realize it was a remake, but I did find it to be a very effective horror film on its own terms. Realize that it is not really a movie in the traditional sense, but a purely visceral experience. Because of this, it relies purely on scare tactics, which is perhaps an even more subjective thing than comedy. If the scares work for you, then you will love this film, if they do not work for you, you will hate it. |

SO SAD.
Just saw "Body of Lies" and REALLY liked it. Damn good film.
A digital chihuahua and a horror flick with no stars beats DiCaprio, Crowe and Ridley? WTF!? |

I WONDER...
How many aspiring filmmakers are posters to these boards. I'd rather see a movie by all these aspiring junior filmmakers than Bret Ratner, my number 1 most hatd entertainer ever. |

The Secret Life of Bees also opens next weekend... I'll be checking that one out (loved the book) and probably Max Payne as well. I'm curious about W. as well, but I don't think I'll be rushing out to see it right away. |

It's rough times like this that people start turning to light entertainment fare like BHC, whether it's crap or not. People don't like to be reminded of the fucked up shit in that's happening in the world (i.e. Body of Lies). |

TO FIRECAPTAIN4
I haven't seen Chihuahua... But you're prolly right it is a bad kids movie... I also agree that there are good and bad kid movies... But when you're a kid that doesn't matter to you... But I can see your point...
Also in this article it does hint to Narnia under- performing... JoBlo also made the same accusation in its box office report back when Narnia came out... It made 55 mill and JoBlo said that it underperformed... I was just pointing out that "fantasy films" when made well will make cash... |

WHAAAATTT???
Did you watch the same movie as I did wallebe? No cheap scares? The entire movie was a cheap scare. Every person was standing completely still, and then when u do a close up on her face she jumps at u and screams, or sits next to ur neck and then bites it, or the "baby" at the end jumping out at you, or the body falling to make u jump... that movie was one huge cheap scare tactic.
I'm not trying to attack u.. I just have a hard time believing this is the same movie. |
