The Ballad of Buster Scruggs trailer teases the Coen Brothers’ Western tales

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Every year Joel and Ethan Coen put out a new movie is a good year to be alive, and this time we get not one, but half a dozen new stories from the filmmaking duo. THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS is their much-talked-about Western anthology, telling six stories set in the rough and tumble West with each filled with eccentric characters and a dash of the Coen’s trademark melancholy. The first trailer for the movie is here, showing glimpses of the main cast, featuring stars like James Franco, Liam Neeson and Tim Blake Nelson as the titular Buster Scruggs.

Originally meant to be a series, the stories were merged into one movie but retained the anthology style, where it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. As with the usual Coen Brothers effort, the movie was met with acclaim (it currently has a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes) and won the Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay. The movie looks gorgeous and reliably entertaining with that signature Coen wit and charm. Along with Franco, Neeson and Nelson, the ensemble features Zoe Kazan, David Krumholtz, Tom Waits, Stephen Root and Brendan Gleeson.

As with every Coen movie, I can't wait to check out BUSTER SCRUGGS. Though I would've loved to see this as an anthology series akin to BLACK MIRROR I think the project will be just as riveting and entertaining as a movie. Plus, this way folks can try and hunt it down in theaters and see some of those gorgeous visuals on the big screen. Is there any other way to watch Nelson as a whacky, pistol-shooting cowboy than on a massive screen? I don't think so.
